Ask someone who has lived in Lakewood for a decade what summer looks like, and they will not describe a season. They will describe a week. Thursday belongs to Del Valle Park. Friday belongs to the parking-lot promenade at Lakewood Center. Saturday morning belongs to the folding tables at Del Amo and Clark. Each night has an address, and the address matters, because the biggest of those addresses just changed hands and is heading into a long reinvention.
This is a guide to that weekly rhythm through the rest of the 2026 summer, with a clear-eyed note on what is coming for the property that hosts a good chunk of it.
Thursday: The Free Concert Most Newcomers Miss
The city's Concerts in the Park series is the anchor of the weeknight calendar. The eight-show run happens Thursday evenings at Del Valle Park from June 11 through August 6, with no concert on July 2. That means as of early August, one Thursday remains before the series wraps for the year.
A few things that are easy to get wrong if you have never been:
- It is at Del Valle Park, not Mayfair or Bolivar. The stage sits on the lawn, and regulars stake out their patch by 5:30.
- Dinner and refreshments are available on site, guests may bring their own picnic, lawn chairs and blankets are encouraged, and pets, barbecues, alcoholic beverages, umbrellas, and canopies are not allowed.
- The tribute-band lean is real. If you want the summer's most reliable people-watching, this is where it lives.
The reason to flag the "no umbrellas" rule specifically: newer residents show up with a full beach setup and end up carrying it back to the car. Bring a low chair, a wide hat, and a soft-side cooler with anything non-alcoholic.
Friday: A Mall Parking Lot That Turns Into A Night Market
For the last few summers, Lakewood Center has hosted a Friday-evening night market that has quietly become the most consistent social event in the city. It runs weekly through the summer with different themes. This July's calendar gives the flavor:
- Lakewood Center Night Market: Pups & Pals on Friday, July 10 from 5:00 PM
- Lakewood Center Night Market: Disney Day on Friday, July 17 from 5:00 PM
- Lakewood Center Night Market: LA Dodgers Day on Friday, July 24 from 5:00 PM
- 2026 Lakewood Center Summer Night Market on Friday, August 7 from 3:00 PM
The theme nights matter more than they sound. Pups & Pals brings out the dog people from Carson Park and the neighborhoods north of South Street. Dodgers Day pulls families who would otherwise be watching the game at home. If you have kids and you have not tried the Disney Day edition, that is the one to prioritize.
Practical note the internet does not tell you: park on the Costco side and walk in. The Macy's lots fill first because they are closest to the interior corridors, but the night market itself spills toward the north edge of the property.
Saturday Morning: The Farmers Market Belongs To The Civic Center, Not The Mall
This is the most common mix-up from people who moved in during the last two or three years. The farmers market is not at Lakewood Center. The Lakewood Farmers Market is open on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on city property at Del Amo Blvd. and Clark Ave., at the Lakewood Civic Center, 4900 Clark Avenue.
The Civic Center location changes how you use the morning. You are already at the library. You are already near the sheriff's station and the community garden. A Saturday routine that used to be "go to the mall, then swing by the market" now works better in reverse: market first at 8, then a walk over to the library, then errands at the Center as it opens at 10.
If you have never done the 8 a.m. slot, do it once. The stone-fruit vendors sell out of the good peaches by 10:30 in July, and the parking is easy for the first ninety minutes.
The Mall That Runs Two Of Your Three Nights Just Got New Owners
Here is the piece most residents have heard something about but have not seen laid out plainly. In August 2025, the property that hosts the Friday night market and sits half a mile from the Thursday concert was sold. Macerich sold the 2 million-square-foot mall for $332.1 million to a joint venture composed of three developers and investors. The trio of new owners are Pacific Retail, which specializes in repositioning underperforming retail assets, Lyon Living, which is set to integrate housing and lifestyle components, and Silverpeak, which will provide investment capital and strategic guidance.
What that actually means for a resident:
The companies said there will be more "elevated retail and dining," in addition to residential units, open space, wellness features and "unique entertainment."
Translate that from developer language. "Residential units" means apartments on the site. "Open space" means the enclosed corridors will likely give ground to outdoor plazas. "Elevated retail and dining" means fewer teen-fashion chains and more full-service restaurants. A transformation may be several years in the making. The three companies said in their announcement on the deal that they will begin with the master plan and design work. Timing around a completion was not disclosed.
Scale check, because scale is the whole story here. At 2,069,000 square feet, the Lakewood Center is ranked among the largest retail shopping malls by gross leasable area in the United States. While Lakewood didn't fit in Macerich's turnaround plans, the center still performs and generates over $1 billion in annual sales. Redeveloping something that size at that revenue level is not a cosmetic refresh. Expect phased construction, parking-lot reshuffling, and a slow shift in tenant mix.
For the summer of 2026, none of this touches your Friday night. For the summer of 2028 or 2029, it probably will.
What Else Is Actually On The Calendar
A few genuinely local anchors that get lost in generic "things to do" lists:
- Lakewood Country Club, 3101 East Carson Street. The 2026 Beach City Classic charity golf tournament is scheduled for Friday, September 18 starting at 7:00 AM at Lakewood Country Club. Even if you do not golf, the club's calendar is worth knowing because it runs the community's fall pivot events.
- Dave's Hot Chicken and Luna Grill inside Lakewood Center. Located at Lakewood Blvd and Del Amo Blvd, just off the 91, 605, and 405 freeways, the center has more than 225 retailers including Macy's, JCPenney, Target, Home Depot, Costco, Victoria's Secret, H&M, and Best Buy, and full-service restaurants including California Pizza Kitchen, Outback Steakhouse, Luna Grill, and Dave's Hot Chicken. If you have not eaten there since the last round of tenant turnover, the roster has quietly moved upmarket.
- Round1 Bowling and Arcade, inside the enclosed mall. Round1 Bowling and Arcade provides a major family entertainment draw. This is the rainy-Sunday fallback that keeps the mall relevant for families who do not shop.
How To Use The Next Few Weeks
If you have already lived through several Lakewood summers, you know most of this. The value in reading it laid out is the timing question. The Thursday concert series ends August 6. The Friday night markets continue into August with the larger evening event on August 7. The Saturday market runs year-round. And the property that hosts a real share of your social life is quietly entering a multi-year redevelopment that will change the physical map you have gotten used to.
The right move for August is to treat these last few weeks as the current version of Lakewood summer, not the permanent one. Take the kids to one more concert at Del Valle. Try the Friday night market at least once before school starts. Buy the peaches early on Saturday. Notice which parts of the mall you use most, because in three or four years, those parts will look different.
